- Cult producer from Sonoma Valley
- Dry farmed vineyard in Santa Cruz Mountains
- Denser, nmore candied expression of pinot noir compared to 'Clary Ranch'
Founded in 2001 in Healdsburg Sonoma County as a collaboration between Nathan Roberts and Duncan Arnot Meyers, their initial release was a paltry 1 barrel of wine but this has steadily grown to around 3,000 cases per annum. They own no vineyards but instead have excellent relationships with a network of growers who intimately understand the type of wines the pair are trying to make. In their words ‘the more marginal (the site), the better’, meaning they prefer to work with cooler vineyards where ripening fruit is a challenge. Each year they release up to 20 different wines covering a multitude of grape varieties as diverse as Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Trousseau, Ribolla Gialla and Gamay.
Interestingly these wines have garnered their enviable reputation not by producing wines of overt size and power but rather, freshness, texture and fine-boned structures.
As is usual, ‘Legan’ produces a denser, more candied expression of pinot compared to ‘Clary’ however this is not to suggest over-ripeness. Loverly washy, juicy fruit, with very attractive mouthfeel. Superb!
