- Some of the best Nebbiolo's you've never heard of
- Great vintage
- Traditionally-styled Barolo
Scarzello Giorgio e Figli are a tiny producer based in Barolo township in the very heart of the region. When tasting these for the first time, we could not believe we hadn't heard of them, however further research pointed to Scarzello still very much being under the radar. With a mere 5 hectares under vine, plus some of the wines being released well after their peers, it may be no wonder...but those who love traditionally-styled Barolo's are better for it!
Sourced from four plum sites of the revered Sarmassa cru, a vineyard well known for its explosive aromatics and the longevity of its wines. Begins quietly, but builds and builds with air. Classic tar, roses and violets, gently herbal, filigree aromas. The palate is disarmingly elegent and composed - where you were expecting bruit force and a dark well of fruit and tannin, Vigna Merenda gently carreses with its power; washy dark cherries, anise and plenty of energy. Again it builds and builds to a superb finale of gushing flavour and long, fine ropey tannin. This has length to burn and is a glorious Barolo to drink now and over the next 10-15 years.
